Sources of Heat Loss Overlooked in the Home - Save Money

Just think how high your heat losses would be, and hence money losses, if you left open a window for the whole of the winter period. This source of heat loss may already be happening in your house.

Here  are some of the places where you may be experiencing massive heat losses in your home:-

Fireplaces

Fireplaces can be places where a large amount of heat is lost.

Most of the homes in the United States are constructed with wood burning fireplaces. One study by scientists showed that having an open damper in an otherwise well-insulated house can raise energy bills by up to 30%.

Solution - Get yourself a fireplace draught stopper chimney plug. Look on the internet for details.

Attic Stairs

If you have a folding attic stairway in your house, you also have a great big hole in the ceiling. When the stairway was installed, the ceiling insulation was removed and an uninsulated sheet of plywood put in its place. Usually, there is a large gap to be seen around the perimeter of the attic door.

Solution - Install an attic stair insulator cover. This will provide insulation over the attic stairs and also provides an air seal to reduce any air leaks.

Clothes Dryer Ducts

The room containing your clothes dryer is usually the coldest room in the house. There is a good reason for this, hot air is continually flooding through the exhaust duct. The metal flapper normally used to provide a seal is simply not up to the job.

Solution - Install a clothes dryer vent seal. The vent remains closed unless the dryer is being used. It also stops any pest infiltration.
